JDRF 100 mile Bike Ride to Cure Diabetes

DCBA member Harry Smith will be participating in his first Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) 100 mile bike ride this August.  The JDRF Ride to Cure Diabetes is a charitable bike ride that has raised over $38 million for type 1 diabetes (T1D) research.

Smith is riding on behalf of his son, Jack Smith, who was diagnosed with T1D.  As is so often the case, he and his wife Marcia knew very little about their son Jack’s condition after his initial diagnosis in 2011.  "All too often, we ignore worthy causes until the issue is brought to your life in a way that cannot be avoided.  For us, this occurred in early 2011 when our son Jack was seven years old.  The support provided to our family, and constant advances in the treatment of Diabetes, have been a constant source of hope since that time.  To see our son educate himself as to his condition, and effectively deal with diabetes on a day-to-day basis is as inspiring as anything we have ever witnessed," said Smith.   Over the past several years, Smith and his wife have become educated as to Juvenile Diabetes and the tremendous work done by JDRF.  This year they have decided that it would be important to support the foundation in a way other than simply writing a check.  Toward that end, he is going to ride to help spread awareness of this disease and the search for a cure.  Smith added, "I hope that my friends and colleagues will see fit to provide a donation to go towards this worthy cause."
